Ugat at Usok (Root and Smoke)
University of Galway, 2024
Ugat at Usok tells the story of Kristine Mercado, a young Filipina woman adapting a piece of Filipino poetry into a Dungeons and Dragons story. However, what appears to be a simple adaptational process is anything but, as Kristine struggles with her Tagalog deficiency, insecurities, and questioning looks from her players asking who this is really for. Inspired by Sunday in the Park with George and She Kills Monsters, the play is a meditation on storytelling, language, legacy, and what it means to belong to a culture and family that seems so far away.
